Prized Seat: Hopefuls Voice Interest In Taking the Reins From Embattled Sheriff McFaul

Cleveland, OH - There will soon be a new sheriff in town.

Longtime Cuyahoga County Sheriff Gerald McFaul announced his retirement late Wednesday amid a firestorm of public scrutiny and failing health. [Read the sheriff's bio HERE]

Gerald McFaul's Chief Deputy Doug Burkhart and Olmsted Township Chief Charlie McNeeley have expressed interest in the top job once McFaul officials steps down on April 1st.

McFaul has been under intense criticism for missing work and lambasted for hiring and promoting relatives. He's also under investigation for interfering with a court case.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office Released the Following Statement:

Citing health reasons, following a lengthy career in public service, Cuyahoga County Sheriff Gerald T. McFaul today announced his retirement, effective April 1, 2009.

Sheriff McFaul has been under doctor's care since suffering a debilitating stroke in 2006. He has been on sick leave for the past 30 days. His attending physician advised him yesterday, that he should retire.
