CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - (11/15/09) Host Harry Boomer sits down with members of the Leukemia Society of Northern Ohio.  The number of people in the country suffering from blood diseases, including Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, is estimated at almost 913-thousand.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society offers services to blood cancer patients and caregivers and healthcare professionals.

The LLS has invested more 680-million dollars in research, almost 69-million in fiscal year 2009.  Research funded by LLS has led to or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy and bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.

An important point was made that Leukemia is not hereditary, but that it is diagnosed when the white blood cells reproduce more rapidly than normal.
