CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Could a budget crunch in Canton be putting people's lives in jeopardy?

The city laid off 28 firefighters over the weekend stating that there just isn't enough money to keep everyone.

Firefighters say the cuts have put staffing at dangerous levels.

The union says they need to man the city with at least 37 firefighters per shift to keep you safe and now with the layoffs that number over the holidays will be cut to maybe 30.

The firefighters had offered $900,000 and told the city to make up the rest from the capital improvement funds but the mayor rejected that proposal.
