CANTON, OH (WOIO) - The Director of Pupil Services for Canton City Schools resigned Monday evening after being arrested last week.

The board met Monday evening with an attorney. They later accepted Irvin's one-page handwritten resignation.

Last week, Peninsula Police say James Irvin, Director of Pupil Services for Canton City Schools, was drunk, suicidal and had a gun with him when he left a local restaurant.

People who claim to know Irvin can't believe what he did, "I think he's just kind of pushed in a box, in a corner and he doesn't know what to do. And was saying that he's embarrassed his whole family."

A phone tip helped cops catch up with him.

The 56-year old has been with Canton City Schools since 2000 and before that he was principal at Brush High School in Lyndhurst.
