(WOIO) - It was a story you saw first on 19 Action News back in February.
Carl Monday first uncovered allegations of possible performance enhancing drugs on the Cleveland Browns. Now, the doctor at the center of the controversy faces criminal charges.
Dr. Anthony Galea is charged with smuggling a growth hormone called HGH and other illegal drugs into the United States and injecting the drugs into his athlete patients.
Three of his patients are not named in the criminal complaint, but they are identified as current or former NFL players.
Four months ago, 19 Action News introduced you to an NFL insider who said he has ties to the Browns. The insider, who's identity was concealed for safety concerns, says he witnessed first hand, Dr. Galea treating two then-members of the Cleveland Browns.
As part of the interview, 19 Action News agreed not to reveal the players names. Neither player is still with the team.
No word at this time if any of the Browns players are among the three who are now co-operating with federal agents in the Galea probe.
Prosecutors say Galea billed the three NFL'ers about $200,000 dollars for the illegal drugs.
