(WOIO) - The wisdom of the American people showed itself once again on election night last Tuesday. In a nationwide vote that when finished looked almost pre-designed, voters elected just enough Republican members of Congress to assure at least partial gridlock in Washington.

You know, professional politicians and pundits love to talk of bipartisanship and "reaching across the aisle" to get things done, but the genius of the founders is that they created a republic with inherent checks and balances that deliberately makes it tough to pass laws…that "get things done."

They understood that treachery hides in a system where it's easy to pass laws. Voters on Tuesday implemented the machinery of that genius. Nevertheless, Democrats in Washington from the president on down were busy this week portraying their crushing defeat at the polls as really a cry by the electorate for bipartisanship in Washington. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The cry voiced on Tuesday by voters was "STOP!", stop making these laws that spend too much of our money. Laws that threaten the nation's solvency and maybe some of its freedoms, too.

The vote Tuesday stops President Obama's Progressive Agenda in its tracks and that's exactly what the voters intended.

Write and let me now what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
