(WOIO) - Now that the election is over, it's time for the nation's leaders to focus not only on improving the economy but on improving methods to keep us safe from the Islamic terrorists who are determined to kill us.

And there are plenty of improvements necessary, not the least of which is fixing the faulty system currently in place to screen cargo that is shipped here from foreign countries. Billions of pounds of packages bound for the U.S. from overseas each year are delivered on passenger flights. And, believe it or not, there is no reliable system in place to screen that cargo for bombs.

The tracking system is under review following last week's plot, apparently hatched in Yemen, to sneak homemade bombs into the U.S. on board airliners. The terrorists apparently hoped to detonate the bombs while the planes were in the air over American cities.

It is hard to believe that after 9/11 there is still such a gaping hole in our national security apparatus.

But now having dodged this latest bullet from the killers in Yemen we had better get the system fixed and soon.

Write and let me now what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate.
