Editorial: An absence of character

Posted: Updated:

It's hard to believe that New York Representative Anthony Weiner can salvage his career after admitting that he lied to cover-up a lengthy behavior of sending lewd photos and messages to women on the Internet but don't think for a moment that he won't try.

Weiner, like a lot of high-profile and ambitious politicians, has a bountiful supply of arrogance and undoubtedly believes that he can convince his constituents that he is neither dishonorable or a pervert even though he is. Is it any wonder why our distrust of politicians is at an all-time high in this country?

Just look at this recent list:  Former Senator John Edwards is revealed to have spent almost a million dollars in apparent political donations to cover up his extra- marital affair.  Ex-governor Schwarzenegger in California got his maid pregnant and helped raise the child right under the nose of his unsuspecting wife and now there is Weiner.

These are men who are clearly disdainful of the idea that our elected public officials should set a standard of honesty and integrity.

Weiner said tearfully this week that he made a lapse in judgment, he is wrong. What he has shown is an absence of character. Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate.
