Editorial: An act of political courage

Posted: Updated:

It isn't often in these days of partisan politics that you see a public official stray from the party line to do the right thing.  But that's exactly what Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson has done by asking State Lawmakers to adopt a merit pay plan for school teachers and to remove job seniority as a factor in determining layoffs.

Now this is big news folks because by taking this position, Democrat Jackson is bucking the State Democratic Party and big labor which are adamantly opposed to these kinds of reforms.  But Mayor Jackson, in a genuine display of political courage, said "You have to make decisions and my decision is to move with children."

Well, the Cleveland Teachers' Union is outraged, of course, and it will be interesting to see what if any political fallout the Mayor suffers.  But his decision is the right one.  Children and the school district can only benefit from a system where teachers are held accountable for their performance.

Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate.
