Canton McKinley football coach controversy

Posted: Updated:
CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

Anger is brewing in Canton after the Board of Education did not renew the contract of Canton McKinley Head Football Coach, Ron Johnson.

Wednesday January 18th, community members gathered at 4pm to form rally groups to be deployed all over the City of Canton protesting the BOE's move.

According to those who oppose the firing of Coach Johnson, the Canton City School Board of Education dismissed the coach without good reason. Under Coach Johnson, Canton McKinley went to the playoffs four years in a row and player grades increased.

Players are also protesting. The team signed a petition last week to get Coach Johnson back on the field.

"The kids want the coach we are doing this for the kids."

In a news release sent out by rally leader J.R. Rinaldi speaking for community, "The Canton City Board of Education has made no attempt to hear our voice. They have made it clear that THEY ANSWER TO NO ONE."

"It's unethical what they've done."

"We all feel for Coach Johnson and we want him back."

"Basically the board members won't come up with legitimate explanations and they keep coming up with excuses for their actions."

Canton City School Board member Nadeen Macawain says it was a lack of outreach to the community by the coach and that he brought in his own quarterback.

Board member Macawain also says the race of the player had nothing to do with firing…Canton McKinley fans of Coach Johnson hope she's right.

A Facebook support group has been formed for Coach Ron Johnson. Click here to visit the "Keep Coach Ron Johnson at Canton McKinley" page.
