When the seniors at The Harbor Court heard about a neglected, senior dog that was dumped in Avon Lake, they sprang into action and came up with a plan to help pay for the medical care for Clifford the dumped golden retriever.
The Harbor Court will be selling "Paws for Clifford" now through Friday, March 16 during normal business hours. Each paper paw print costs $1, and folks can write their names on the paws, which will then be posted on a wall within the senior living facility.
They'll also be selling a specially made "Clifford Cookie, " designed and baked fresh by the Grateful Dog Bakery in North Ridgeville. The yogurt-dipped peanut butter heart-shaped dog cookie will be sold for $1, with half the proceeds also benefiting Clifford's veterinary care. The residents are saying, "Have a heart and buy a Clifford Cookie."
"Seniors still have a lot of life in them; they just need the right environment to thrive in. The residents at The Harbor Court are reaching out to help a fellow senior. The only difference is this particular senior gent happens to have four legs," says Kathi Greco, Director of Community Relations for The Harbor Court. "Our goal is to raise $500, which will really help Love-A-Stray animal rescue group with Clifford's mounting medical bills."
Clifford the dog was dumped on Lake Road and rescued by Love-A-Stray, an animal rescue group based out of Avon Lake. The 10-year-old golden was found emaciated, covered in fleas, had two ear infections and his eyes were swollen shut from infection. Much of the hair on his back and tail were missing from poor nutrition and skin infection caused by the fleabites, and much of the visible skin was raw and oozing.
"Clifford was a mess," says Connie Field, Director of Dogs for Love-A-Stray. "He is receiving excellent veterinary care by Dr. Lamb of Avon Lake Animal Clinic, and will be a resident at the Clinic for at least two weeks until we can get the infections under control, his skin cleared up and some weight on him. This is a severe case of neglect. But despite all the neglect, pain and poor condition this dog is in, he still has a tail wag for everyone he meets."
Besides the paw print sale, The Harbor Court is also accepting monetary donations for his care, which can be dropped off during normal business hours or mailed to The Harbor Court at 22900 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, 44116. Please make checks payable to Love-A-Stray and put "Clifford" in your check memo area. They are also accepting supply donations for Love-A-Stray, which includes: bleach, fleece blankets, antibacterial wipes, paper towels, leashes and toys.
