Dimora defense begins after Judge denies motion for delay

AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

The Jimmy Dimora corruption trial is underway after a four-day recess.

The prosecution rested it's case after nearly six weeks of trial.  At the start of the day on Tuesday, it was unclear if the case would go on after Dimora's request for more time.

Over the weekend, attorneys for Dimora petitioned the court for a two-day delay in the proceeding. The judge, however, denied that motion.

Robert Glickman, the attorney for defense witness Charles Randazzo, told 19 Action News that he had been called Monday night and told to be here with his client.

Judge Sarah Lioi denied motions to dismiss 3 of the 26 charges against Dimora, but she did take a fourth under advisement. Only one of the hundreds of exhibits was excluded.

First on the stand was Deborah Shaw, a space planner for Cuyahoga County. She coordinates the real estate and land needs of county departments and says she recommended the hiring of Steve Pumper and DAS Construction to consult on Courthouse Square, a county office project.

Prosecutors have suggested the work valued at just under $25,000 was steered to Pumper by Dimora. This occurred exactly when DAS was doing free work at Dimora's home.
Just under $25,000 number is key.  Prosecutors were quick to point out that if the contract was any more than that it would have had to go out to bid. By staying under $25,000, it was simply given to Pumper and DAS.
