The horrendous shootings at Chardon High School will undoubtedly scar that community for years to come. And, predictably there will be plenty of second guessing by authorities, school officials and even parents about what could have been done to prevent the tragedy.
It is natural for us to think that something this unthinkable must have occurred because of some failure in the community, something that we did wrong. And yes, the ready availability of guns is a valid issue. But, by all other accounts, this senseless act like last year's shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in Tucson, was committed by a seriously disturbed young man. And, unfortunately, history has shown us that it is almost impossible to prevent acts of violence committed by deranged individuals bent on mayhem. If it were only otherwise.
And, realizing and understanding this is small comfort, of course, for the grieving families of the dead and wounded, and indeed for the entire community.
