The almost mythical political career of Dennis Kucinich came to at least a temporary end this past election day and he has himself mostly to blame.
Yes, the GOP-controlled state legislature didn't do him any favors when they created a new district combining Dennis' west side Cleveland base with the Toledo district of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. But he lost and he lost badly in part because voters came to realize that his interests and ambitions made him increasingly irrelevant as their representative in Congress.
His constituency service organization remained strong but the congressman himself seemed less focused on Ohio in recent years and more interested in running for president, or impeaching Bush, or establishing a cabinet level "Department of Peace". You know, being an outspoken gadfly like Kucinich is almost guaranteed to raise a politician's profile -- until, of course, the voters lose interest.
Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
