RITTMAN, OH (WOIO) -

Rittman Police were called to a home on North Seneca Saturday night after residents in the area heard shots being fired.

Police say they started getting numerous 911 calls just before 9 p.m.  An officer in the area also heard the shots and responded.

The officer was met by neighbors who indicated to him which house the shooter retreated into and gave the officer initial information on the person who had done the shooting.

Because it was believed that the shooter had additional weapons available to him a quick evacuation of neighboring residences was done and a safety perimeter set up with the assistance of the Doylestown Police Department, the Highway Patrol and the Wayne County Sheriffs Dept.

The Rittman SWAT team along with the Orrville Police SRT team and Rittman EMS Tactical Medics were activated.

It was believed that the shooter had a wheelchair-bound in the residence with him.

Officers on the scene made numerous attempts to make contact with persons in the residence through cell phone and patrol car PA system. During this time movement was observed within the residence. Around 11:15 p.m. a person in the house began to turn the front porch light on.

At 11:18 PM the male came out of the residence and was immediately taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Rittman Police Department and evaluated by EMS.

A short time later, a wheelchair bound female exited the residence and was also secured for officer safety.

Emergency crews on scene checked the residence to insure there wasn't anyone else in the residence. No one else was found.

A search warrant is being obtained for the residence for evidence. Shell casings were observed in the front yard by responding officers.

Due to the time of day its unknown at this time if any area residents were struck by the rounds that were fired.

Police have identified the man in custody as 27-year-old Joseph Ziruolo.  He is being held in the Wayne County jail for allegedly discharging a firearm within the city limits and having weapons while under disability.

He will be arraigned on Monday.
