Editorial: The end of the house phone

Posted: Updated:

Next up on the list of items rapidly becoming obsolete in today's digital world is the landline telephone. And now, for some of us, it seems not so long ago that there were party lines and the phone itself weighed about ten pounds.

But, visit the home of almost anyone under the age of 40 these days and you may not see a landline phone anywhere in sight. For the younger generation, the cell phone has become the only phone necessary.  And now a bill has been introduced in the state legislature that would allow phone companies to get out of the landline phone business altogether.

Well, consumer groups are opposed saying such a law would harm older and low-income Ohioans…especially those in rural areas -- and, we agree. In addition, you know, cell phone signals can be easily disrupted by natural events like solar flares and also by electronic jamming devices.

Cell phone technology has revolutionized communication but the reliable old house phone should still be available to those who want them.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
