UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The Upshur County Sheriff's Office has opened an animal cruelty investigation after noticing dozens of dogs living in unkempt conditions.

Lt. Freddy Fitzgerald says the dogs were discovered while authorities served a warrant at a residence off of State Highway 155 S near Gilmer, in connection with several overnight commercial burglaries.

Fitzgerald says officials immediately obtained another warrant to search the property.

Officials seized 28 animals in all, among them were lots of small dogs like Chihuahuas and Yorkies.

Fitzgerald says the dogs were caged in an "unhealthy and cruel manner."

The dogs have been taken to a local veterinarian for care.

At this time, the Upshur County Sheriff's Department is investigating animal cruelty charges. The homeowner has not been arrested or charged.
