Meningitis closes Dunbar Elementary in Summit County

TALLMADGE, OH (WOIO) -

Tallmadge City School District officials report that Dunbar Primary School (elementary) will be closed Monday due to a confirmed case of meningitis.

Steve Woods, Director of Business for Tallmadge City Schools tells 19 Action News that a male, 2nd grade student went home sick on Friday, April 27th and it was later determined that the student had a confirmed case of meningitis.

The male student remains hospitalized this weekend, but is recovering.

Parents were notified by phone blast message Saturday.

School officials have been scrubbing down the school since Saturday.

The school will be closed today, Monday, April 30, as officials wait to see what type of meningitis strain they are dealing with.

Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges. The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria or viruses, but meningitis can also be caused by physical injury, cancer or certain drugs.
