Nick Walczak continues his long road to recovery after he was shot several times at Chardon High School in February.

Nick barely survived the shooting, and was saved by a heroic teacher.

"The most important person I need to thank right now is Mr Ricci because he is the person who saved my son's life," Nick's mother, Holly said. "He's the one who pulled him from the hallway into a room. He's forever our hero."

Nick's spinal cord was injured, and he is paralyzed from the waist down. The teen is now undergoing intensive physical therapy with the hope that he will walk again.

Starting this year, the month of May is recognized as National Mobility Awareness Month. The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association is giving away at least three mobility vans to a caregiver, veteran or person with a disability that is dealing with or overcoming mobility challenges. Nick has been nominated to win a van.

Winning a mobility van would allow Nick to make an easier transition to resuming his active lifestyle. The van would also help Nick and his family travel from Chardon to MetroHealth Medical Center for his rehab.
