Healthy BBQ Tips

Posted: Updated:

Memorial Day marks the start of summer, but those BBQs and parties could mean the end of your healthy diet! Here are a few simple ways to avoid the battle of the bulge.

  • Load your plate with fruits and veggies so you aren't as tempted by chips and cookies.
  • You'll want to avoid or go light on high calorie condiments such as cheese, mayo, ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, etc. Instead use healthier options like mustard or oil and vinegar.
  • You don't have to skip the burger all together, but try to add plenty of lettuce, tomato, and onion rather than cheese and condiments
  • Potato and macaroni salad are both high in calories. If you want to go the healthy route, make it yourself! For potato salad, try using light mayo instead. You can make macaroni salad with whole wheat pasta, but that's not going to save much in the calorie department.

Alcohol is the area where you might be consuming the most calories without noticing:

  • A margarita contains: 740 calories
  • A long Island ice tea contains: 750 calories
  • A pina colada contains: 650 calories
  • A strawberry daiquiri contains: 250 calories
  • A glass of red wine is: 166 calories
  • A bottle of light beer contains: 99 calories
  • A bottle of regular beer contains 148 calories

An alcohol free version of your favorite beverage will cut the calories and best to go light on the margaritas. It's also a good idea to have a glass of water after a cocktail to stay hydrated and keep your calories under control.
