Huntington Beach near drowning victim dies

BAY VILLAGE, OH (WOIO) -

The teacher who was pulled from Lake Erie at Huntington Beach on Monday has died from her injuries.

46-year-old Laura Recco of Independence died at St. John West Shore.

The student Recco was trying to help, nine-year-old Diamond Harris, has been released from Rainbow.

Diamond and Laura were at the beach with other classmates and teachers from the Hopewell Day Treatment Program in Cleveland.

Witnesses say lifeguard Christian Perarchick and a man at the beach with his family heard a swimmer screaming for help, and jumped into the lake to help.

The Good Samaritan, Navy veteran Clint Kranes, was first to find Diamond and brought her onto the beach. Kranes also helped pull Laura out.

According to ODNR, a swimming advisory was in effect at the beach at the time of the incident.
