Amish family seriously injured in crash

HOMER TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating an accident that seriously injured an Amish family.

The Medina County crash happened around 9 p.m. along SR 301 near the intersection of Black River School Road, Tuesday.

Joseph Swartzentruber was driving a horse-drawn buggy with his wife, Katie, and 2-year-old daughter, Lizzie.

Justin Frey was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 when he struck the buggy from behind and pushed it off the east side of the roadway. 

All three occupants were ejected from the buggy. The horse pulling the buggy had to be put down due to injuries. 

Frey was not injured in the crash. 

Town and Country Fire Department transported Joseph and Katie Swartzentruber to Akron General Hospital with serious injuries.  Lizzie Swartzentruber was transported to Akron Children's Hospital with serious injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and it remains under investigation. 

Charges are pending upon review by the Medina County Prosecutor's Office.
