U.S. Department of Education awards more than $56,000 to help Chardon schools recover

CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

The U.S. Department of Education announced today a $56,000 Project School Emergency Response to Violence (Project SERV) Immediate Services grant awarded to Chardon Local Schools in Chardon, Ohio, to support recovery efforts following a shooting at Chardon High School earlier this year that resulted in the death of three students and injury of three others.  
 
"When tragic events disrupt the lives of children and schools, it is vital that they receive the support they need to cope with the trauma," said U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. "These Project SERV funds will help the community and students secure the services and resources they need to feel safe and healthy so the learning process can continue."
 
Project SERV provides critical support to districts and institutions of higher education that have experienced a significant traumatic event and need resources to respond, recover and re-establish a safe environment for students. The Office of Safe and Healthy Students has awarded more than $29 million to 96 grantees since the grant program began in 2001.
 
The grant covers the cost of Chardon Local Schools' efforts to provide several resources and services following the shooting, including a security guard at the high school; mental health screening and referral services for students and staff; substitutes for teachers and support staff who need time for counseling services; a team-building activity; and program supplies for mental health workers to support recovery.
