Well, it started again this week when the Indians losing streak reached 10 games. Fire the manager, fire the GM, we need a new owner like the Browns! The Indians are last in baseball attendance -- at slightly more than 20,000. I can hear Tom Hamilton playing solitaire again.
So, what to do? Now comes the Red Sox with a payroll of $179 million, $100 million dollars more than the Indians. Hardly fair. But, as the Red Sox are learning this year, money does not always buy a winner even though it does most of the time.
The NFL solved the problem on the haves and have not's with a salary cap. A city like Green Bay would not have a football team without the cap, let alone those Super Bowl wins. Yes, once in a while a team overachieves. This year, that may be the Cincinnati Reds or the Washington Nationals, both with payrolls similar to the Indians.
Of course, by now, you may be wondering if the salary cap is so great in football, why has it not worked for the Browns? Well, we don't have all the answers.
Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
