Avon football players caught partying won't play

AVON, OH (WOIO) -

Ten Avon High football players will not take the field Friday against Avon Lake and will sit during their home opener against Wellington next Friday.

This after Avon Police broke up a house party that involved underage drinking.

Cops received reports of a mailbox being broken on Evergreen Drive.  When they arrived they found 15 teens, including football players, hiding in the basement and the 17-year-old hosting the party admitted alcohol was being served.

No charges were filed but it was enough for school officials to determine that their athletic code of conduct was violated.

Avon students are standing behind their school's decision.

"I think it's a great thing because in every other city the same thing happens but no other city recognizes it.  Avon is being proactive about it and no one can deny the same exact kids are doing the same exact thing everywhere else," said Hailey Miller.

"I think we will be fine.  Avon is built as a team and not just individuals," said Mallory Deele.

The Eagles were Division II state runner-ups last season, finishing with a 13-2 record.
