CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Quarterback
Kameron Smith and running back Maurice Lewis led the Winston-Salem State Rams
to a 55-21 win over Morehouse College Saturday in the 2012 Cleveland Classic
presented by McDonald's in front of a crowd of 10,000 at Cleveland Browns
Stadium.
"We
had an outstanding weekend of events for the 2012 Cleveland Classic, capped off
today with an excellent game between Winston-Salem State and Morehouse,"
Greater Cleveland Sports Commission CEO and President David Gilbert said. "The
Step Show on Friday night was a huge success and we are extremely pleased with
the entire weekend. We are also thrilled the Classic was able to stress the
importance of a strong education to so many students in our region. All in all
it was a great event for our community that provided significant economic
impact to the local economy."
Winston-Salem
State moves to 3-0 on the year, and were presented with the Cleveland Classic
presented by McDonald's trophy by McDonald's owner/operator and Cleveland
Classic co-chair Herb Washington after the game.
The
Rams used three first quarter touchdown passes by Smith to jump out to a 21-3
lead. Smith completed 21-of-41 passes on the day for 307 yards and four
touchdowns, while his backfield partner, Lewis, ran for 139 yards and another
score. Carlos Fields and Khendra Reid led the WSSU defense with an interception
each.
Quarterback
Donnay Raglund led Morehouse with 74 yards on the ground, while also throwing
for two touchdowns. Lance White and Brandon Houston led Morehouse on defense
with 11 tackles each. The Maroon Tigers leave Cleveland with a record of 1-2.
Saturday's
festivities at the 2012 Cleveland Classic started with the Tailgate Party
presented by University Hospitals and the College and Career Experience
presented by Verizon. The WSSU Red Sea of Sound and the Morehouse House
of Funk then electrified the crowd in the KeyBank Marching Band Halftime
Show, with the band from Shaw High School in East Cleveland opening the show.
Friday's
Cleveland Classic events included the College Readiness Fair presented by
McDonald's and College Now, Symposium to Advance Educational Excellence, PNC
Praisefest 6 presented in partnership with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the
United States Marine Corps presents the Cleveland Classic Greek Step Show.
The
2012 Cleveland Classic's weekend of events, including the Greek Step Show,
College Readiness Fair, President's Reception, Tom Joyner Meet and Greet and
football game, drew over 16,000 total participants.
