BG gas line ruptured for fourth time

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - A gas line was ruptured Wednesday in Bowling Green on North Main St in the middle of a construction zone.

Police shut down North Main from Poe to Industrial for about three hours when contractors hit a natural gas line underground.

The road re-opened sometime after 6 p.m. Wednesday. Fifteen businesses had to evacuate in the area around the Marcos Pizza, just south of the Kroger Plaza.

Business owners said this is now the fourth time this year that this has happened. The businesses that are able to stay open say they lose business because customers cannot get to the parking lots.

"Well I can't get to the businesses. 13 I was going to go grocery shopping but I can't carry home what I was going to buy, so I guess I will just go tomorrow," said Ami Stork who lives by the gas leak.

"Oh the first time, we had to evacuate for three hours and we just pretty much entertained ourselves, watching people go by, hoping that it would hurry up and get over with," said Margaret Chapman who is tired of gas leaks.

An ODOT spokesperson said they do not know the cause of this gas leak but there are a number of utilities underground that are vulnerable during construction projects. ODOT promises to work with the contractor to make sure it does not happen again.

ODOT said it will always air on the side of caution when it comes to evacuations. The road construction project on North Main will not be complete until early next year.
