Donation gives Honor Flight 1 more trip for Vietnam vets

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Honor Flight Northwest Ohio will make one more trip to see war memorials in Washington D.C. this year.

A flight on Wednesday was supposed to be the final one for 2012, but money from an anonymous donor has added one more trip. This one will take 150 Vietnam veterans to D.C. on Oct. 23.

The family of a deceased World War II veteran approached Honor Flight President Lee Armstrong and asked him to extend the 2012 season. It was the World War II veteran's wish to "pay tribute to those who served during the Vietnam War and to honor his son, who passed away much too young."

Vietnam veterans will be selected for the October 23 Honor Flight based on their date of application. Some have been on the waiting list since 2008. We will begin calling the 130 Vietnam veterans (those who have already submitted applications) this coming weekend (September 29-30, 2012).
