Humane society of Sandusky County at risk of closing

SANDUSKY COUNTY (Toledo News Now) - The Humane Society of Sandusky County could be forced to close their doors by January. The human society is out of space and almost out of money.

"It cost us ten to twelve thousand a month for payroll, vet bills, utilities, everything, medication," said Human Society Board President Joanne McDowell.

The organization relies on fundraisers and donations. It is hard to stay afloat when animals just keep coming through the door.

"We would like to be at a hundred cats, and 15 dogs. The problem is people say, well it's just one more cat, but by the time we spay and neuter, feline leukemia tests, give shots, worming, flea treatments we've got 150-200 dollars in cat, that we adopt out for 60 dollars," said McDowell.

The Humane Society of Sandusky County is at 150 cats and 25 dogs. Last week, they took in 30 cats in a hoarding case. This past weekend they found 5 more abandoned kittens on the road.

"We're crossing our fingers that somebody's going to come along and save us, that's all we can do. We just all pray every day that we'll be here," said McDowell.

With two fundraisers coming up, McDowell said they are hoping to make it through January with the money raised.

McDowell said if the time comes for the Humane Society of Sandusky County to close its doors, dogs will most likely go to another shelter but she is uncertain about the cats.

"My bigger worry is the cats, there's one group that already came to us and said they'd take 12 and we have a hundred and fifty, so that's a drop in the bucket, but I would hate to think we have to euthanize cats that have had all these, everything that's done to them," said McDowell.
