Eagles make good on cancer victim fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

NORTH BALTIMORE, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Saturday night fundraiser in North Baltimore was supposed to be for a woman who said she had cancer.

But authorities say it was all a lie.

A negative though has been turned into a positive at the local Eagles Lodge.

That woman is 38 year old Kimberly Gustwiller.

Authorities have charged her with theft by deception.

She's accused of faking the illness and raising money for medical treatment for a disease she didn't have.

"It was kind of a shock to all of us that she would fake something like this," said one woman at the fundraiser.

But the Eagles Lodge has found someone else to help with their cancer fund.

It's Marv McCartney.

They served up walleye dinners for $8.00 each and held raffles.

Marv didn't find out he was the recipient until he walked through the doors of the Eagles Lodge.

"I was kind of really surprised. It's a great organization here the Eagles. I can't believe they did this for me," said Marv.

Marv has prostate cancer.

He says he gets chemo every three weeks.

"Really can't recover trying to keep it even though because I got some in my bones," said Marv.

Marv is moved by the honor.

It's still too early to tell how much money the Eagles will give him after hundreds of the dinners are served.

"That's just the nature of the Eagles. We're people helping people and that's what we try to do," said Gary Bretz of the North Baltimore Eagles.

Despite the cancer, Marv McCartney is a happy man.

The Buckeyes won on Saturday, the Tigers are headed to the World Series and he's surrounded by friends helping him through a difficult journey.
