43 Forum: Fatherhood initiative

Posted: Updated:

My guests and I discussed just how important it is for fathers to be a positive influence in the lives of their children.

Al grimes, of the Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative, stated that when fathers are involved, their children do better in school, graduate more often, don't become sexually active as early and teen girls don't get pregnant as often.

In addition to talking about that, Ward 16 Cleveland City councilman Jay Westbrook, discussed the societal impacts, including teens getting in trouble and ending up in the juvenile justice system, which often leads to adult prison.

As part of their effort to get dads more involved they are promoting Thursday, September 20th as fathers walk day, during which fathers are encouraged to walk their children to school and to continue doing so as often as possible.

We had a guest from Akron's Fame Fathers, Pastor Eugene Norris, who also promotes the same ideals.

The Fame Fathers cover, Summit, Stark, Wayne, Portage and Lake counties.

Another guest, Dessie Sanders, Principal of the Michael R. White S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) school, talked about the upside of fathers in their kids lives and the importance of fathers coming to their children's school and staying positively involved.
