NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) -

A Norwood Police officer appeared in court on Wednesday after video surveillance caught him in an altercation with a suspect.

Officer Bobby Ward was suspended in September after it appeared on camera that he threw a woman across the room where she hit a wall face first.

The incident happened inside the police station on Montgomery Road on Aug. 11.

Ward pled no contest and was sentenced to 180 days, which was suspended. He will be on probation and home incarceration. He has also resigned from his job.

According to police reports, Denise Diallo, 30, of Lexington, had stolen a car the day before then went back to the station to obtain some of her personal belongings. Officers told her they didn't have them and Diallo started screaming and cursing at them. Authorities say she then slammed the phone against the wall and, according to the reports, lunged at them.

Diallo was then told she was under arrest and she fled. She was apprehended a short time later in the street in front of the station and handcuffed. Officer Robert Ward, who goes by Bobby, said Diallo kicked and scratched him. After she was taken back inside the station where a surveillance video captured the altercation.

When Ward filled out the police report he wrote, "the defendant leaped from the officer's arms, while they were securing their weapons, jumping through the doorway, falling to the ground."

Ward was charged with misdemeanor assault. Charges against Diallo were dropped.
