HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -
What is being called the largest marijuana bust in Butler County occurred on election night. An undercover sting netted 939 pounds of pot valued at about $1,200 per pound totaling approximately $1.2 million.
It occurred at an empty storage building in the 4700 block of Industry Drive in Fairfield Tuesday night. Sheriff's officials say two Mexican nationals were part of a Mexican drug cartel.
Arrested are Balermo Orozco Ruiz, 21, and Armando Camacho Lopez, 31. They are both being held on $30,000 bond each and are charged with Trafficking in Drugs and Possession of Drugs, second degree felonies.
"They continue to deliver them to the wrong place but I appreciate their deliveries. Keep it coming, our property room is getting pretty full at this point," says Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones. "The investigation is still ongoing, it's not over. This shipment was intended for distribution here in Butler County. Undercover agents were the deliverers and the drug dealers were the people picking up the drugs and thought they were part of the cartel but they were sadly mistaken, those were police officers."
"When you see a large, tremendous amount of marijuana like this coming into Butler County it's just a microcosm of what's going on all over the country," added Fairfield Township Police Chief Richard St. John, who has an officer on the task force which made the arrest. "God only knows how much is going every place else that no one knows about or doesn't catch."
Jones says these people are very dangerous. "Keep in mind, when somebody's out driving their vehicle and you stare at these people and you don't know who you're looking at and they think you're staring at them and maybe you pick up your cell phone at the same time. Well, these people may think you're calling the police and kill you right then," he said.
