The battle over layaway programs is underway

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Let the layaway wars begin. Many retailers are doing what they can to get your holiday dollars.

New this year, Walmart  is offering a longer layaway period meaning you have more time to pay and now more items are available.

The retailer lowered its Christmas layaway open fee to $5 from $15.

Kmart , the discount unit of Sears Holdings Corp. is fighting to get more of your business.

The retailer has removed the service fee altogether from layaways.

In the past Kmart charged $5 to $10 dollars to use layaway.

Toys "R" Us also did away with its layaway fees and extended its service to everything, including all toys, video games and swing sets.
