A day set aside for remembering those who serve our country and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice ended up being the perfect day to award a local veteran the Purple Heart he never got.

Today was a day that was decades in the making for Ron Covrett, a proud Marine who received the Purple Heart today, Veteran's Day, for something he did during Vietnam 43 years ago.  A memory so fresh it brings tears to his eyes, "I get choked up. I don't like to but I get choked up," he told us.

Covrett says his mind was from here the moment that award was being placed on his jacket, "I was thinking about the Marine that got shot in front of me. He went down, 18 years old. American kid."

Covrett was shot as his platoon was ambushed by the Vietcong.  He pretended to be dead and then launched some grenades at the enemy when they least expected it.

"I ended up making the enemy disappear. By that time, the rest of my unit came up on line and finished up the rest of the enemy."

That would get Covrett his second Purple Heart.

Now, Covrett is affectionately referred to as "Sarge" and find this a fitting way to spend Veteran's Day, with family, friends and fellow comrades who know that freedom isn't free.

After all the gathering and congratulating is over, Sarge says he's got one more stop to make.

"When I leave here today I got about four Marine Corps Veteran buddies of mine that are buried at Holy Cross. I plan on bringing some Marine Corps flags for them.
