AKRON, OH (WOIO) -
An Akron man assaulted and shot during a robbery in the city.
It happened Friday around 5 p.m. in the 600 block of East Avenue.
48-year-old Nelbert V. Smith reported the suspect approached him armed with a handgun and demanded money. The suspect struck Smith in the mouth with the butt of the handgun, and then fired a shot into the ground and one into Smith's buttocks.
The suspect then took Smith's cell phone and $280 in cash before fleeing. Smith drove to Akron General Medical Center for treatment. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
