A high school teacher convicted of having sex with five students is getting out of prison.
A hearing was held Tuesday morning for Stacy Schuler, who was sentenced to four years in prison in October 2011 for having sex with five Mason High School students in her Springboro home.
The 34-year-old health and gym teacher was sentenced on 16 counts of sexual battery and three counts of providing alcohol to a minor.
Schuler wrote a letter to the judge over the summer, saying she's been tutoring fellow inmates to help them get their GED's. She's requesting early release for good behavior.
Several parents of the students testified during Tuesday's release, asking that Schuler remain behind bars. One of the victims also testified, and the judge read letters from other victims who were not in attendance.
"I am angered that we have to relive these events just after one year of a four year sentence," one victim's mother said. "It is my belief that her release is not justified after serving just one year."
The mother of one of Stacy Schuler's five victims gave her tearful statement in court on Tuesday, saying she was appalled everyone had to return to court so soon.
"Our son and our family have spent the last two years in emotional turmoil. The effects will be with us for a lifetime."
One victim also spoke and said Schuler took advantage of him during a rough time in his life.
"Ms. Schuler has not apologized to those she hurt or taken accountability for her actions," he said.
For the first time since the case began, Schuler addressed the court.
"I'd like to take full responsibility for all of the crimes and all of the harm and the pain that I've caused everyone who's involved," Schuler said.
"I allowed the line between teacher and student to blur, and as an adult I knew better," Schuler added. "As a teacher, it goes against my professional ethics to do that."
Judge Robert Peeler ruled that she could get out early. She will be on probation for five years and must stay away from the victims and undergo counseling. She also can't have alcohol for five years and will have to register as a sex offender.
