While only light snow at best is expected in many areas road crews are not taking any chances.
Ashtabula, Lake and parts of Cuyahoga counties are on ODOT's watch list Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning as crews are primarily concerned with the low temperature. In many of these areas -- temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
The main focus is on bridges and overpasses which freeze before the road surface. Some ODOT crews are working 16 hour shifts.
ODOT manager Tom Henderson monitors some 480 miles of roads in Lake County via a computer with sensors actually placed in the asphalt to give surface temperatures in real time.
"As of 8:00 p.m. tonight the bridge surface is 31 but it is dropping," said Tom Henderson.
The cold snap also helped business at some local tire shops, in fact one is reporting sales and service have almost doubled.
