Deer overpopulation plagues Avon Lake

Posted: Updated:
AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) -

A growing problem with deer will be discussed at a meeting in Avon Lake Thursday night.

The city has been plagued by an exploding deer population in recent years. There have been 37 auto accidents caused by deer so far this year, and the population is well over what the city's vegetation can maintain.

The situation has become controversial as some residents oppose allowing bow hunting, a solution that has begun to work in nearby North Ridgeville. Another solution is to tranquilize the deer and inject them with a contraceptive serum.

Many residents have complained about being confronted by aggressive deer. Deer are currently in their rut or mating season and are more active than normal during that time.
