HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Shop small, shop local.

City leaders hope you will take advantage of Small Business Saturday.

Tuesday, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and city leaders held a news conference at Lawren's Gift Shop on Madison Street.

Battle said stores like Lawren's and other independent businesses add character, prosperity, and make the city unique.

These stores contribute to the economy and community.

November 24th is declared as Small Business Saturday.

"It's a quality of life. Where else can you find unique things you can come down, you can look at, you can hold, you can purchase? It's important to support our local businesses because they support us," Battle said.

"Small businesses support this economy. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Without small businesses, where would this country be?" asked Pammie Jimmar with the Chamber of Commerce.

Small Business Saturday doesn't just include stores. Independent restaurants will also participate.
