Cleveland hiring 25 new police officers

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson announced Wednesday the city will hire 25 police officers within the next 6 months. The hope is that the additional manpower will help with the city's gun violence problem.

Homicide numbers have soared this year. As of several weeks ago, the stats showed the murder rate up about a third.

The Cleveland Police Chief's office tells 19 Action News murders so far this year are almost equal to the total for all of last year.

There are many different motives for the gun violence, like robberies, gang violence and drugs.

All men and women applying for the jobs, need to have at least three years experience.
