Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is facing surgery on his left hip and will miss the next four to six months, CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post originally reported that Rodriguez was headed for surgery.
Rodriguez previously underwent surgery on his right hip in March 2009; however, this time the issue is with his left hip.
Rodriguez, 37, is coming off a season in which he hit a solid .272/.353/.430 with 18 homers. However, his performance degraded badly down the stretch, and he was even benched in the eventual loss to the Tigers in the ALCS. This news, of course, explains the reason behind Rodriguez's much-discussed benching.
All of this is made more noteworthy by the fact that Rodriguez is under contract through 2017 and is still owed a minimum of $116 million. Rodriguez is fifth on the all-time list with 647 career home runs.
