Cleveland (WOIO) - The latest Browns coaching rumor going around has the team hiring Josh McDaniels as their head coach in the offseason, with the former John Carroll star bringing a quarterback with him.

According to the Boston Globe, the Browns will hire Michael Lombardi as the team's general manager and McDaniels as coach.  The duo will then trade for Patriots back-up quarterback Ryan Mallett and make him the starter.

McDaniels, who is the Patriots offensive coordinator, coached for a season and a half in Denver before being fired in 2010.  He started 6-0 with the Broncos, but then went 5-17 in his final 22 games as head coach.

The article lists new Browns CEO Joe Banner and Lombardi's coaching wish list as Alabama's Nick Saban, Oregon's Chip Kelly and McDaniels.

The Plain Dealer is also reporting McDaniels would love to resume his head coaching career here in Cleveland.

During a conference call Tuesday to announce the hiring of new team president Alec Scheiner, Banner said the decisions on current head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert will be made quickly after the season is over.

"I don't want to say if it's one day or two days or three days, but I think it will be quickly," Banner said.

"Obviously as time has gone on we've thought about it more, we've talked about it more, more factors that will influence the final decision have become clearer and clearer," he continued. "I don't want to make it sound like we're in the same place we were two or four or six weeks ago. That has advanced quite a bit. But we're not at the point where we've made definitive decisions."
