East Texas police officer appeals termination Thursday morning

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Officials from the city of Longview heard Officer Leigh Ann Snyder appeal of her termination from the Longview Police Department on Thursday morning.

On December 11, 2011, Officer Snyder and a civilian passenger were responding to a burglary alarm when they were hit, head on, by a drunk driver. Snyder's injuries were the worst.

According to Longview city policy, employees must be let go if they miss 12 months of full-time work in a two year period.

According to city spokesman Shawn Hara, Snyder filed the appeal with the city's human resources department last month. The city's appeal committee, which consists of three city employees, heard from both Snyder and the police department this morning. The committee will then make a recommendation that will go to the city manager within the next five working business days. The city manager, or the city manager's designee, will then have 10 working days to consider the recommendation and then make decision. That decision is final.

Hara said the appeals committee is a standing committee, and members rotate every two years. The members are picked by the HR director. They include one executive level employee, one supervisory level employee, and one employee from anywhere from the city's organization.
