WAYNE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

The Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened on State Route 585 south of Wayne County Road 48 Friday night.

Troopers say Michael Keeran, 33 of Akron was southbound on SR 585 when he drifted onto the snow and ice-covered edge of the roadway and lost control.  He over-corrected traveling left of center and striking the passenger side of a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle, Matthew Perry, 23 of Smithville, remained on the roadway.  Keeran's vehicle came to a rest in a ditch.

Due to the severity of the impact, Keeran and his passenger, Patricia Hopkins, 48 of Akron were trapped in the vehicle and fire personnel had to use rescue equipment for them to be removed from the scene.

Perry was transported to Wooster Hospital with minor injuries.  Keeran was transported to Akron General Hospital.

Hopkins was pronounced dead on the scene.

Seat belts were in use by all occupants.

The initial investigation revealed that driver inattention and an icy and snow-covered berm were factors in the crash.

Motorists are reminded that, though the main part of roadway may appear clear, driving onto the berm can be very hazardous. During periods of winter weather, roadways can quickly change from clear to snow-covered or icy.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol would like to encourage all motorists to adjust their driving behaviors accordingly, including reducing speeds, increasing following distances and devoting full attention to driving.

This is the first fatal crash in Wayne County in 2013.
