ODOT final plans for public areas around second new Innerbelt Bridge presented

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Tuesday evening, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) held a public meeting to discuss options for the look and feel of community areas surrounding the second new Innerbelt Bridge.

During the spring of 2012, ODOT engaged groups of city and county officials, local community development organizations and business interests to introduce proposed enhancements and ask for feedback. These Focus Groups provided further suggestions and refinements to the areas. A public meeting was held in July and comments on the widely-commended plan were accepted.

In Tremont, the plan includes a public space in the vicinity of Abbey Avenue and W 14th Street - known as "The Sideyard" - which will serve as a "nature play" area for the local community. The plan also includes a public overlook along the Towpath Trail and Abbey Avenue beneath the new eastbound Innerbelt Bridge; and enhanced entrances to the Towpath Trail.

Across the river, in the Gateway area of downtown, the plans includes enhanced landscaping in the area of inbound Ontario Street, East 9th Street and the I-90 ramps; and wall treatments along inbound Ontario Street - a special salute to Cleveland announcing "Cleveland Rocks!"

Public comments on tonight's proposals will be accepted in writing to info@Innerbelt.org  now through January 15, 2012. Final plans will be presented to the City of Cleveland's Downtown/Flats Design Review and Planning Commission for final concurrence. Clevelanders may also view tonight's presentation and provide comments online by visiting www.Innerbelt.org and selecting "Second (Eastbound) Bridge" from the menu at the left.
