CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
The 34-year-old man who admitted stealing large brass bells from St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Olmsted Township was sentenced to rehab on Wednesday.
Brian Diamond avoided a prison sentence, and was instead ordered to rehab. He must also pay restitution.
On August 26, 2012, Diamond stole five brass bells from St. Innocent Orthodox Church, which were valued at $5,500. The bells were secured to wooden planks which Diamond used a power saw to remove. He then sold them for scrap metal.
Diamond was arrested on August 28 by Olmsted Township Police. After the arrest, Diamond began sweating profusely and complained of chest pains. He was then transported to a nearby hospital.
When Diamond was released from the hospital, police were putting him in their vehicle when he kicked at the officer and fled. Police found him shortly thereafter hiding in a nearby marsh.
On December 7, Diamond pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of escape.
