CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Bob Reid, on his last day in office, stepped off an elevator to thunderous applause from about 100 county workers on Friday.

"I am overwhelmed," Sheriff Reid said.

Earlier this month, County Executive Ed FitzGerald asked for Reid's resignation. Reid still is not sure why.

"I don't know, I really don't. I was as surprised as everybody, everybody was shocked over here, when I went over I thought I was going over for an evaluation as I had done last year."

Three and a half years ago, Reid took over a Sheriff's Department in disarray. The former sheriff,  Gerald McFaul, was convicted of theft in office and an ethics violation.

"I think we made a difference. We did a lot of good things in three and a half years. They were waiting for leadership to come in and we stepped in and filled a void."

Reid said the first six months on the job were an incredible challenge, but at the same time the job was fulfilling. He obviously believes he deserved a better fate.

"Were you angry? Are you still angry?" asked Reporter Brian Duffy.

"I am not angry, maybe a little, at the end of the day that's not the way I wanted to go out," Reid replied.

There were hugs and handshakes and Reid says he does not want to go away bitter. He is planning a two week vacation in California to visit his daughter.
