PENDLETON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

A Pendleton County volleyball coach was arrested Friday for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Cassandra 'Cassie' Elfers, 21, turned herself in to authorities Friday and is facing first degree sexual abuse charges. She is the part-time volleyball coach at Sharp Middle School in Butler.

She also quit her full-time job as a waitress at Eduardo's Pizza and Subs in Falmouth last week.

Elfers is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy who played sports at Sharp Middle School. "I don't think that should happen to any child. I don't wish that on no parent, no child," said Falmouth resident Rosita Johnson. "Leave the minors alone. They're having enough hard of time growing up in this world right now with all the drugs and the violence," said Johnson.

Elfers was held in the Kenton County Detention Center on Friday, and later posted bond around 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Pendleton County Schools Superintendent, Anthony Strong released this statement:

On Sunday, January 13th,  the administration of the Pendleton County School District became aware of rumors that a paraprofessional, part time coach, may have been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student. The administration acted immediately to investigate and took the necessary steps to insure that this individual had no further contacts with students.

The matter is now in the hands of the Kentucky State Police and the Pendleton County Attorney with whom we are fully cooperating.  No further public comment will be made by the school district pending the resolution of the criminal proceedings.

I assure you that the administration of the Pendleton County School District acted swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. That is, and will always be our primary concern.

Elfers is a 2010 graduate of Dixie Heights High School.

Attorney Eric Deters told FOX19 that he will represent Elfers. Deters was the attorney for former Ben-Gal and Dixie Heights High School teacher, Sarah Jones, who was also charged with having sex with a student. Jones received no jail time in a plea deal back in October.
