GREEN, OH (WOIO) -

A 52-year-old robbery suspect fished out of an Akron canal after jumping in to elude police.

Cops were called to the BP on South Arlington Road in Green around 7:30 a.m. on January 19 for a robbery.

Earlier that morning, the same robbery suspect had stolen cartons of cigarettes from the Sheetz on West Waterloo in Coventry and the Circle K on Massillon Road in the City of Green.

As the suspect, identified as Ahmad Salti of Rocky River, attempted to leave, a Good Samaritan reached in the driver's side window of the suspect's vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel. The Good Samaritan was dragged for a short distance and Salti fled north on Arlington Road.

A short time later, deputies located Salti on East Exchange Street in Akron. The deputies initiated a traffic stop and Salti stopped, exited his vehicle, and fled on foot towards the canal off of River Street. The deputies pursued him on foot. Salti jumped into the canal behind Goodyear, but then began yelling to the deputies for help once he entered the water. The deputies helped Salti out of the canal and placed him under arrest.

Salti was arrested and charged with Robbery. Salti also had existing arrest warrants for Fraud and Driving Under Suspension. He was treated by the Akron Fire Department and transported to a local hospital.
